Page 7 Friday, June 27, 2014 www.bayviewassociation.org The Town Crier On Sunday, June 29th, the Bay View Music Festival will present "Life is a Cabaret" at 8 p.m. in Hall Auditorium. This performance is a rousing collec- tion of the humorous, honest and inti- mate ranging from Kander and Ebb's Broadway show of the same name to the conventional French cabaret. The concert, the third in the weekly Sunday Sunset vespers series, is open to the public and has a little something for everyone. The cabaret probably originated in France in the 1880s as a small club that presented amateur acts and satiric skits lampooning bourgeois conventions. The first German Kabarett opened in 1900 in Berlin, where musical acts were accompanied by biting political satire. By the 1920s it had become the centre for underground political and literary expression; this decadent but fertile artistic milieu was later por- trayed in the 1966 musical Cabaret. In the U.S. the cabaret developed into the nightclub, where comedians, sing- ers, or musicians performed and can still be recognized in the jazz, folk and comedy clubs that it spawned. This "vespers" concert opens with a hearty "Wilkommen" and includes pieces representing the evolution of cabaret from a can-can to a Johnny Mercer tune, capturing the spirit of the classic and contemporary cabaret.
